A guy called Gerald

As you may well be aware, there’s quite the obsessional interest in so-called “Manchester music” among certain quarters. So I’m laying a card on the table … the only Manc’ musician who helped me reflect on ‘Manchester’ through the long hours of drafting book one was Gerald Simpson.

If you search and find the interview, clipped below, you’ll see and hear the authentic approach and calm refrain which drive his art – and those terms pretty much sum up the essence of ‘a Mancunian attitude’ that I’ve identified with since the mid-1980s, around the time when a young Gerald was first tinkering with audio equipment and making music within Greater Manchester, and long before ‘A Guy Called Gerald’ went global.
